Ernest Henry Gobin began growing vines for Muscadet in 1904. He cultivated vine-growing at Château Bigotière in 1938, planting Melon de Borgogne (Muscadet) and Colombard grapes. The vineyards were originally worked with a single horse and plow to tend the soil and trimming of the vines was done with hand shears and the pressing was with a traditional screw press and the wine was transported via river in barrels to Paris. Henry was fascinated by the art of the vine and wine, a passion that has followed down the generations, including his great grandson who took over shared ownership of the Château in 1971. Production methods were modernised replacing the horses for tractors and using a modern harvesting machine, shared with the neighbouring vineyard. A new, modern winery was also built. Daniel became sole owner of Château Bigotière in 1988. In 1998 Daniel’s son Christopher moved to the property to become part of the family business and in 2004 his second son Cédric also joined the company, allowing Daniel to retire and hand over the winemaking business to yet another generation of passionate winemakers. The business continues to thrive, having had a second winery built in 2010, producing wonderful wines steeped in the history of the family.
